The Equine Photography Retreat pt. 1

Last year, I was asked to be a speaker at a brand new event for equine photographers – The Equine Photography Retreat. I love to help other photographers grow, but don’t host my own workshops anymore because they are time-intensive and my schedule stays quite full year-round (except during a pandemic 😉) so saying yes teach at this retreat was a no-brainer! I presented on four topics: Creative Composition for Storytelling, In-Person Photograph Sales, Horse & Rider Posing, and Commercial Photography Success.

The retreat was held in Wellington, Florida, which is home of the Winter Equestrian Festival, a 12-week horse show that draws horses and riders from around the world. The whole city caters to equestrians – horses are everywhere! We were VERY blessed to have held the retreat less than 2 weeks before the country essentially shut down due to Coronavirus.

The retreat ran for 3 days and each day ended with styled shoots hosted by speakers at the retreat. I’ll share photos from the first styled shoot today, and the second one tomorrow.

The first styled shoot was held at a beautiful farm called ATG Equestrian. We had several horse owners model for us and I showed students how I find just the right light, as well as how I pose and interact with people during portrait sessions. Here are some of my favorite photos from that session!
