Morgan Horses in the Snow

Morgan Horses Running through the Snow

My friend Carol and I had been planning this photoshoot all winter. Her horses live just 10 minutes from me and she has a colorful herd of morgans on a very scenic piece of land. The part that couldn’t be planned is, I wanted to go on a morning when there was frost clinging to the trees and that only happens a few times a winter, usually with little warning.

As I was eating breakfast that morning, daylight started to illuminate the landscape and I looked out to see the trees heavy with frost. I texted Carol, she replied, and we were in business!

I took care of my own horses and then thought I would wait until the sun came up a bit more before leaving. Then she sent me a photo of one of her foals with frost clinging to his fluffy coat. I chugged my coffee, grabbed my gear and hit the road.

We chased horses and stood in the snow for over 3 hours because we were having so much fun! Expect to see a few of these photos in next year’s calendar!

Some of these photos are available in my Fine Art Store. They are also available for license in the Equine Stock Photo Library.

When there’s frost on the trees like this, I know that the fog is usually followed by a brilliant blue sky! I picked out some of my favorites from Carol’s herd and had her move them to this pasture overlooking a wetland area. The white backdrop and the warm color of the horse’s coats against the contrast of the blue really made them stand out!

It was -17F with a -37F wind chill this morning when I was out doing chores this morning. Just remember that when you are wishing you lived in this beautiful winter wonderland! 😆

Remarkable. It looked like paintings- as if a cross between Andrew Wyeth and Fredrick Remington.
