At the age of 31, Star is definitely the oldest horse I’ve ever photographed in any kind of formal way. He is also one of the sweetest, quietest, and most patient. Maddie hasn’t owned him his whole life, but I believe she must be one of the best people to come into it, and will probably be the one to see him to the end. In spite of his age, Star is still in good health and is ridden often. The quiet relationship between he and Maddie was beautiful to document.
This session was one of my “Remember Sessions,” offered to owners of aging or ill horses. We generally outlive these animals we love so much, and I would like for every person who has loved a horse to have quality photographs to remember them by.
The above photo is definitely in the top 10 of my all time favorite equine photos. I love not only the silhouette and beautiful colors and patterns in the sky, but I love the symbolism these two enjoying the sunset of Star’s life together.
I’m trying to branch out a bit and use different kinds of light. I usually avoid direct sun, but I like its golden quality on this day and embraced the moment.
Star does NOT look or act 31
Star was shaking off bugs here, but I kind of liked how both of them had hair flying!
